Some more interesting research on M1 Carbine use after WW2.

The carbine was used quite extensively by NZ and British troops in the Malayan and Borneo campaigns, along with things like the Owen gun (I have an ex NZ SAS example in my collection) and the 12ga Browning 5 shot with a 20" barrel.

I have just discovered that the NZ SAS in Malaya (1955-57) also used M2 carbines, and Remingtom 870 riot guns, in addition to the others mentioned.

The carbines issued to our troops in Malaya were from British stores and probably remained there. I have never seen any evidence of such items being brought back officially. Unofficially, many M1 and M2 carbines have been sneaked back by returning servicemen, from WW2 to Vietnam. M2's pop up in auctions from time to time but many are modern rebuilds from early carbines that have the correct markings. Still, an M2 that has been made into an M1 and then reconverted back with original parts must be kosher!
