It might be nice to get a big payout if you are the owner, but it makes it hard for the collector who wants to preserve history, rather than make an investment.

JMHO (just my humble opinion) pirat

Yep, I hate going to auctions now, my heart sinks everytime the prices hype up. Bought my first M1 for $450, and the most recent for $950. My M1A1 was only $1350 3yrs ago, now they sell for over three grand!

I dont have an E-cat so it doesnt bother me at all but I can agree on the whole bastard investors n dealers paying silly money. SLRs interest me a tad more and they dont seem to be getting any cheaper. Antique arms helps keep things real but Ted Rogers is not really helping those in the buying market. Good for sellers though. No point complaining for too long though or you miss out altogether.. kinda like waiting too long to buy a house - cant go sailing if ya miss the boat

Does that auction site have anything to do with E-Bay? Just curious.
In NA, the owners of E-bay are rabidly anti-firearm ownership. They provide large financial support to the people, Stateside, who think you should not be allowed to own any firearm.

I would say there are certain individuals within Trademe (more likely to be woman, or limp wristed males who hug trees) who don't understand why anyone is interested in firearms, and has no idea exactly what each type is, only... they are BAD. They KILL. Must BAN THEM. Evil or Very Mad

Given the position of power they move themselves into in these places, they exert there self believing dominance, and ban all firearms. They probably confince themselves that doing this is making the world a better place! Waste of space people as far as I see them.

My .2 cents worth! Rolling Eyes

PostSubject: M1 Carbine prices...   Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:37 am

Hello everyone, I guess I am the newest member from the States. My father and I purchased my M1 from CMP back in 1961 or 1962 for the princely sum of $20 US! Well, I guess the price was pretty good even for those days because it took nearly two years for CMP to get me my Carbine... There were monthly "announcements" in the American Rifleman Magazine that list what lucky back-order numbers were shipping the next month...

In the end, I think I got it but it was a bit of a "mutt" (excuse me, I meant "re-armored")... It has an Underwood Barrel (dated 11 43), a Winchester stock (with the yellow number 31 painted on the bottom of the hand grip and a Receiver whose serial number looks like it was a National Postal Meter!

Although today's prices (as well as New Jersey's completely IRRATIONAL classification of this weapon as "an Assault Rifle") make it extremely difficult to collect, I believe it also signifies that the M1 Carbine (and it's fatter older brother the Garand) have finally been recognized for being the magnificent weapons they are!

I will likely lie in the weeds and learn from you all for some time. I have recently dusted off the Carbine and made a personal commitment to myself to treat it like the wonderful treasure she is (and sneak it into a neighboring state so I can squeeze off a few hundred rounds from my 15 and 30-round mags!

Andy
