| I just picked one an M1 Carbine.... nice shape!!! It has this on the barrel behind the front sight " Underwood 1-44" with a flaming bomb or something like one under the 1-44. No markings on the stock that I can find... serial number is 2186*** Atop the chamber is "U.S. Carbine CAL 30 MI " On the bottom of the bayonet lug is "CO" or "OC" I'm new to M1's... so I don't know exactly what you're looking for but if this helps... good luck. I don't know exactly what I have and would appreciate any help to tell me if this is something worthwhile or just another weapon. To me it's a keeper and I'm sure I'll enjoy it for decades to come.

| what you have isnt an early underwood, its what is called a second block, or series underwood. first block (early) underwoods have the serial numbers between 135000 - 1449999 | |

| What exactly does that mean? Was it made in 1944 or is that just something they stamp on them for other reasons... I don't have a clue what "second block or series" means... I'd appreciate a clarification. I did not buy it as a collectible... just something I've wanted for a long time... and finally found one. Thanks in advance. | |

| You can go to http://www.m1collectorsclub.com/M1_Carbine.html and there is a list of manufacturers and the serial numbers they were authorized to manufacture... The barrel is certainly an underwood and 1 44 is the production completion date. If the receiver/chamber only bears the US Carbine.... 30 M1 that means it was not likely to have been re-armored or restored by a foreign government (as thousands of these were given to help local police after WWII - copper116 wrote:
