Gentlemen. I own a nice Inland M1 in good condition. Appears to have been made in June 45. All looks kosher apart from the marking on the receiver. It is M2 over stamped M1. Well a 1 over a 2. All parts apart from the M2 cut in the stock are M1 (I think). I assumed that this change in marking was an official one done in the U.S. during a refit. However a very helpful carbine forum in the U.S. has cast some doubt on this. Opinion being that it was punched M1 to disguise its origin and then refinished. These blokes know there stuff but I’d like a second local opinion.
If I can get my carbine to them is there an expert locally who can have a close look at my carbine and give me their opinion of what I have? I live in the Hutt, Wellington area and get out to Raumati (family) most weeks. Any help will be appreciated.

Havn't had time to look at PM's yet but the situation can vary. Handstamped, as opposed to machine stamped 1's and 2's exist. Most common in NZ is a machine stamped 2 on top of the original 1, and then you can get a handstamped 2 on top of the 1. When and when this happened is of interest to collectors. Very few original M2's are found in N.Z, most are M1's converted to M2's in the period 1945 to the beginning of the Korean conflict. I have never seen a 1 on top of a 2. Serial numbers and barrel dates always help research of course. More asap. Mike.

Thanks Mike.
Not too sure how to post pictures here. I'd prefer to send them to you direct.
I'll let you judge but I am sure it is a1 over a 2. Looks hand stamped. My first guess was that it is an M2 "bring back" from NZ forces in Vietnam. Then converted to M1 and over stamped so as not to run foul of the local law. I'll dig it out of the gunsafe and let you know the serial number and barrel date. Your help is appreciated.
